A Modern Biointensive Farm in a Beautiful Historic Setting

❧❧❧

Welcome to Hedera Farm

The word “hedera” is the Latin (and scientific) name for the ivy plant. While both a symbol of fidelity and longevity, the typographical symbol of the ivy leaf (❧)—also called a hedera—has been used since ancient times to denote the end of one paragraph or chapter, and the start of a new one. It is with that symbolism in mind that we are penning a new chapter for this beloved and historic property.

Hedera Farm is many things. It is a garden that supplies delicious and nutritious foods to our local community. It is a bucolic retreat for escaping hectic urban life. It is a farm with historical significance to Francestown and the Monadnock Region. And we hope that soon it will be a place where people can come together to learn about sustainable agriculture and hone their culinary skills through gardening workshops and our Farm-to-Table Cooking School scheduled to open in the Summer of 2025.

Hedera Farm is located on N’dakinna, which is the traditional ancestral homeland of the Abenaki, Pennacook and Wabanaki Peoples past and present. We acknowledge and honor with gratitude the land and waterways and the alnobak (people) who have stewarded N’dakinna throughout the generations. To honor these peoples and show respect for their ancestral lands, we strive to be excellent stewards of our environment, use water and irrigation in responsible and sustainable ways, and practice bio-intensive and regenerative agriculture to ensure the land and water stay healthy and productive for many future generations.

Some of our practices include:

Meeting or exceeding USDA Organic agriculture standards.

Using only OMRI listed additives, fertilizers, organic composts and manures.
Managing pests and weeds by hand, and using only natural and non-toxic (bee-safe) deterrents as pest controls.

Planting native wildflowers and flower gardens to attract native pollinators.

Using sacrificial “trap crops” and “lure crops” to lure wildlife and pests away from the gardens.

Growing our crops from non-GMO, Certified Organic, and Heirloom seeds started here on the Farm.

Using cover crops to reduce weeds and erosion, and reintroduce nutrients and organic material to the soil (“green manure”).

Being conscious of our water use, and utilizing weather-dependent timers and drip irrigation to minimize water usage and runoff.

Keeping our prices reasonable because we feel everyone should have access to healthy, fresh, locally-grown produce.

Donating unsold/unused produce to the Francestown Food Bank on a weekly basis.

We operate a seasonal Farm Stand that is open from June-October, and are working on establishing a Mobile Farm Stand to bring our produce to more communities in Southern New Hampshire. (Visit our Farm Stand page for info on hours and locations)

We encourage you to bring your own re-usable bags, but provide compostable produce bags at our Farm Stand. Our bags are certified for home composting.

Bulk and special orders are available.

"In the rush to industrialize farming, we’ve lost the understanding, implicit since the beginning of agriculture, that food is a process, a web of relationships, not an individual ingredient or commodity."
